Hawthorn Berry - Crateagus laevegata

H121
!

Also known as May Tree, May Blossom, or White Thorn. A Druid sacred tree, this deciduous, thorny shrub has serrated, lobed leaves, dense white flower clusters in late spring, and red false fruits (haws). The flowers consist of five white petals, sacred to the Goddess.

During World War I, young Hawthorn leaves were used as substitutes for tea and tobacco, and the seeds were ground in place of coffee.

Hawthorn is the classic flower to decorate a maypole. A herb of fertility, it finds its place in weddings, May Day celebrations, and ritual groves. Beltaine was once reckoned as the day the hawthorn first bloomed. Wands made of hawthorn have great power. The blossoms are highly erotic. Use for Fertility Magick; Protection; Defense; and Chastity.

Hawthorn is sacred to the fairies, and is part of the tree fairy triad of Britain "Oak, Ash and Thorn" and where all three trees grow together it is said that one may see fairies.

Place the berries beneath the mattress or around the bedroom to maintain chastity or celibacy. However, it has long been used to increase fertility and is the reason it is incorporated into many weddings.

Hawthorn flowers & berries are commonly used as a tea by itself or tea blend. As with all herbs and alternative health practices, it is recommended that you make your medical physician aware.

Holy Thistle Herb - Carbenia benedicta

H124
!

Also known as Blessed Thistle.

Make into a tea and sprinkle all around the outside of the house to defeat curses. Very useful in hex breaking spells.

Culpepper (1652) writes of it:

'It is a herb of Mars, and under the Sign Aries. It helps swimmings and giddiness in the head, or the disease called vertigo, because Aries is the House of Mars. It is an excellent remedy against yellow jaundice and other infirmities of the gall, because Mars governs choller. It strengthens the attractive faculty in man, and clarifies the blood, because the one is ruled by Mars. The continual drinking the decoction of it helps red faces, tetters and ringworm, because Mars causeth them. It helps plague-sores, boils and itch, the bitings of mad dogs and venomous beasts, all which infirmities are under Mars. Thus you see what it doth by sympathy.

'By Antypathy to other Planets: it cures the French Pox by Antypathy to Venus who governs it. It strengthens the memory and cures deafness by Antypathy to Saturn, who hath his fall in Aries which Rules the Head. It cures Quarten Agues and other diseases of Melancholy, and a dust Choller by Sympathy to Saturn, Mars being exalted in Capricorn. Also it provokes Urine, the stopping of which is usually caused by Mars or the Moon.'

Mattheolus and Fuschius wrote also of Carduus benedictus:

'It is a plant of great virtue; it helpeth inwardly and outwardly; it strengthens all the principal members of the body, as the brain, the heart, the stomach, the liver, the lungs and the kidney; it is also a preservative against all disease, for it causes perspiration, by which the body is purged of much corruption, such as breedeth diseases; it expelleth the venom of infection; it consumes and wastes away all bad humours; therefore, give God thanks for his goodness, Who hath given this herb and all others for the benefit of our health.'

Horsetail Herb - Equisetum arvense

H125
!

Horsetail gains it's name from it's bristly appearance. The genus name Equisetum is derived from the Latin words equus, meaning horse, and seta, meaning bristle.

The plant grows in two stages.  The first stage occurs during the spring, when the it sprouts a fertile hollow stem that is similar to asparagus.  After the fertile stems have withered and died, during the summer months, thin, green, barren stems branch out (which is the stage where it looks like a horse's tail).  It is during this stage that the plant is harvested for use.

It is perhaps this herbs growing cycle that has led to it's use as a fertility herb in magick.  It is generally after unsuccessful attempts at conception that we turn to magick as an aid in conception, and it is at this time that we believe our previous fertility is in a barren state.  The same can be said for any period of creativity, where we feel our well has run dry.  Symbolically, Horsetail is a herb for new beginnings, and ruled by the element of Earth, this herb is an excellent addition to fertility charms.

Spiritually Horsetail is an aid in dealing with loss and depression.  Associated with the Five of Cups in the Tarot, which is the card of "crying over split milk".  In this card the person is unable to look past what they have lost, what they have not got, to see the joy in what they do have.  The figure in the Five of Cups is so full of sorrow over his two spilt cups, that he finds no joy in what the remaining cups have to offer.

This too ties in with it's use as a fertility herb.  When using magick as an aid to fertility and creativity, it is important to focus on the positive, rather than the negative.  For women especially this herb and it's association with the Five of Cups ties in strongly with our menses.  The spilled cup (monthly period) may signify that conception has not yet been achieved, but this shouldn't be your focus.  You should look to the other cups for love, hope and support for the next coming cycle.

A herb ruled by Saturn, this herb is also helpful in rites where you wish to let go, and once again the strong feminine energy from Horsetail makes it excellent as a tool for women who are having difficulty entering or accepting their Crone stage.  Horsetail is most powerful *after* it's fertile state, and so are women!

Associated with our root chakra, it links us to our most primal and basic instincts.  In times of loss and bereavement, we often feel that we are stripped of everything, and this is when horsetail is most helpful to us.  Horsetail is a herb of new beginnings, and when we feel we have lost everything, this herb can help us start again and rebuild.

It is added to baths in sachets, infused and sprinkled on objects or persons to cleanse them, and hung up in the home to purge it of evil negativity.

Jasmine is used as an aphrodisiac both magickally and in aromatherapy.  The scent is said to be calming, and of special aid in treating sexual dysfunctions such as frigidity.  Perhaps because the scent is so alluring, that we cannot help but feel beautiful and desirable ourselves when we are surrounded by it!

Jasmine is associated Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of good luck and prosperity, and the flowers can be added to prosperity spells, and the tea included as part of rituals, or as part of a prosperity diet.  In rites to honour Lakshmi, Jasmine and Lotus combine very well together.

It is a powerful addition to fertility rituals and spells, and is high in creative vibrations (the womb being the centre of creation).  A herb of Water, Lady's Mantle can be used to connect to our emotions, but not so much in the expression of emotions, but rather the control of emotions, especially in relationship with others.  It can be helpful, not by suppressing our feelings, but by helping us to look at them in a mature and self reliant manner by connecting us with our own sense of self worth.  In line with the influence of Venus, Lady's Mantle is about recognizing our self worth, and learning to love from within.
